    A Beautiful Weekend in Seattle

The Locks is a truly amazing experience. The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, often called the Ballard Locks, link salty Puget Sound with the fresh waters of Lake Union, and Lake Washington.  Watch the parade of sailboats, motorboats, tugs, barges and yachts passing through as the water level is adjusted.

Then head to the Fish Ladders. The sockeye run is the largest, along with the Chinook and Coho salmon runs which you can just catch the tail end of in October if you go soon.  Here’s an amazing fact…

Between hatching and spawning, the returning fish must survive many hazards. In the end, less than one egg in 1,000 survive to spawn as an adult.  That’s enough just to marvel at the spawning fish you see from windows in the fish viewing room.

Sonoma, CA Trip cont. ~ Tiburon and the Lodge

Posted by Susan Moore No Comments »

For the second half of our trip we stayed in Tiburon.  Tiburon is a quaint old sailing town in Marin County; located just 20 minutes north of San Francisco. Once a lagoon lined with houseboats (called Arc’s), today Tiburon is lined with many of the original Arcs now showcasing themselves as shops, galleries, cafes and waterfront restaurants now called “Ark Row”.   Tiburon’s Main Street has been preserved as it was when the town was a Gold Rush train town and lumber yard.

We stayed at The Lodge at Tiburon, a fantastic hotel, that we will definitely return to.  For a modest rate, we enjoyed all of the amenities. The pool was beautiful and relaxing, the outdoor fireplace was heavenly to sit and drink wine at and the ground floor rooms have nice patios that access all of this.

The bay has optimal views of San Francisco which you can visit just by taking the passenger ferry from downtown Tiburon!

There was nothing stuffy about this town. You can find restaurants, cafe’s and diners to fit every mood.  Dave and Mikes Restaurant on the boulevard was our favorite breakfast spot.  Their tag line – “An Adult Day Care Center” caught our attention and once you meet Mike, it’ll all make sense.

Our trip to Sonoma & Wine Tasting

Posted by Susan Moore No Comments »

What new crotchet has posessed my excitable brain? We are suddenly on an airplane headed to Sonoma Valley to sip and savor the harvest season. Sonoma is California’s first Wine Country and the birthplace of California’s wine industry. It is home to more than 40 premium wineries, all a stone’s throw apart on a 17-mile span of enchanting country lanes.

As I talked with residents of Somona, there seems to be a healthy competition with Napa Valley. Residents feel that Sonoma is more community oriented, and that locals are  socialble and neighborly.  We definately found that to be true.

Every restaurant feels like a small encounter with Italy.

We first visited Sebastiani Vinyard & Winery which is not only beautiful but a magnificent shopping experience as well.

One winery I would tell you to be sure not to miss in Sonoma is Viansa Winery -   An Italian heritage winery with a tile-roofed Tuscan Villa which sits high above the Sonoma Valley on a hilltop surrounded by olive trees and vineyards.

There was a little get-together with family and friends that evening to enjoy our abundance of the day.  Unfortunately there was a little mishap with the wine tasting… I could not resist an impulse to laugh at my miserable quandary.

    Newcastle’s Favorite Winery

Posted by Susan Moore No Comments »

Chateau Ste Michelle’s Vintage Reserve Club. Chateau Ste Michelle Winery not only has a summer concerts series and wine tasting tours, they also have a very popular Vintage Reserve Club. The winery puts on an appreciation concert every year for it’s members and we were fortunate enough to be invited this year.  Of all the concerts I’ve been to, this had to be one of the most fun.

And why not? For this event, the gates open at 4:00 and the winery provides free wine tasting until 6:30 pm.  Thats two and a half hours of wine, food, cheese, and socializing even before the concert begins.

This was a huge event and it was packed with people who really knew how to do it right.

I wish I’d gotten a picture of it but the the crowed went crazy when they announced the “ring toss”.  6 inch rings being tossed around bottles of wine, and people were walking out of there with 3 and 4 bottles of wine. Now I know why they were so excited.

These were no wine “tasting” pours either.

These guys have obviously done this before

We actually ended up sitting right next to Rick and Linda,  also from Newcastle.

Oh that’s right, there was a concert too. This evenings performance was Earl Klugh and Jackie Greene also played on Sunday night.

Mariners beat the Yankees! only 20 Minutes from Newcastle

Posted by Susan Moore No Comments »

Friday night was the perfect Mariners game experience.  A warm sunny evening and yes, the Yankees were in town!  By 4:30 pm the SODO area was a frenzy.

Safeco Field is really an amazing experience. With the summer evenings still upon us, the ballpark’s one-of-a-kind retractable roof is wide open to breathe in that fresh sea air. The three movable panels close or opens with just a push of a button.

If you dont see Mike the Beer Man, you’ll definately hear him.  This guys’ really got a  voice on him.

This boy was sitting in front of us and I missed half the game just watching him he was so darn cute.

So just know, that Safeco Field and the Mariners are only 20 minutes from Newcastle which is just another reason I love it here.  It really is cose to everything. Hey, and take a look at that scoreboard would ya.

Take your family Kite Flying in Long beach

Posted by Susan Moore No Comments »

When was the last time you went Kite Flying or visited Long Beach Washington?  It hasn’t changed much but it’s still a great way to have fun!

Anchored on Washington’s southwestern-most coast, the Long Beach Peninsula is rich in tradition, raw beauty, with loads of things to do, and only about 3 and a half hours drive from Newcastle.

Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Columbia River and Willapa Bay, this favorite vacation destination is a refuge for people seeking the solace of a seaside retreat.
