Exercise Has Big Benefits During Times of Stress

Exercise Has Big Benefits During Times of StressBy Jaime Greene, Director of Business & Membership

When economic woes have millions of Americans fretting, the Lake Heights and Bellevue Family YMCA’s  reminds families and individuals that a little sweating can offer important physical and emotional benefits.

Many members of our community are facing financial struggles that can put them and their families under a lot of physical and emotional stress. Now more than ever, it’s important to make sure exercise is part of our daily routines. Even a short walk or swim can help reduce the negative effects of stress.

Research has proven the important role of exercise in combating stress and reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Even moderate physical activity can produce mood-boosting endorphins, clear the mind, improve focus and positively affect blood pressure and other symptoms of stress.

The YMCA encourages members of the community to make physical activity a priority, especially during tough times, and offers a few simple tips:

  • Make an “exercise transition” between work and family time. Take a short walk after work or before kids get home from school to clear away the stress of the day and get a positive boost before interacting with family members. A little “me time” can have a positive influence on “us time.”
  • Find an enjoyable physical activity that requires some mental focus to steer the mind away from worries-a pick-up game of basketball, a tennis match or even jumping rope.
  • Instead of going online to repeatedly check the balance of your 401k, check out training plans for a 5k run or walk and get family and friends engaged to reach a healthy and achievable goal.
  • Visit the YMCA or your local community center and find affordable family activities such as family swim nights, dance classes and walking groups just to name a few.  At the YMCA, financial assistance is available to make programs available to all.

Tips for making your resolutions a commitment to year-round health

Every January as the calendar turns to the New Year, people around the Puget Sound vow to stop smoking, lose weight and get in shape. But, as we all know, the optimism of January often fades in the months that follow.

The Lake Heights Family YMCA has been helping people achieve their personal health goals for more than 20 years and offers some advice to help keep New Year’s resolutions fresh throughout the year.

·        First, choose an activity that you find enjoyable and convenient. It’s much easier to stay committed to something that you love rather than forcing yourself to do something that you really don’t enjoy. Check out a new class or activity, such as kick boxing, water aerobics or Zumba

·        Second, once you’ve found it, do it consistently and think long term. The number one reason people become discouraged with their workout is that they don’t hang in long enough to see results.

·        Third, set realistic goals. Having an ambitious long-term goal, like participating in a triathlon, is fine, but remember you are working on a gradual lifestyle change and you will achieve it incrementally. Set reasonable expectations for yourself to avoid getting discouraged and quitting early.

·        Fourth, consider exercising with a friend or joining a group to reinforce your resolve. Take a group exercise class or get together several friends for a weekly walking club. Many newcomers to exercise have told us that regularly participating in group activities helped hold them more accountable to sticking with their resolutions.

A new year is a great time to renew your commitment to your health. For information about programs at the Lake Heights Family YMCA, or the new Coal Creek location opening fall 2009, visit http://www.seattleymca.org/page.cfm?ID=lh or call 425-644-8417.
